Google Says No Special Steps Are Needed for Generative AI Rankings — What That Means for GEO

Google's John Mueller says generative AI answers come from the regular search index. Here's why that does not mean GEO is unnecessary, and what to do instead.

    What Google Actually Said

On August 25, 2026, Google's John Mueller answered a common question on Bluesky: do sites need special steps to appear in Google's generative AI responses? His answer, as reported by Search Engine Roundtable, was direct: "From our POV there's nothing really special you need to do for generative AI responses in search." In other words, if Google can index and rank your page, it can also use it as a source for an AI-generated answer.

This sounds like good news for anyone already investing in SEO. It also sounds like bad news for anyone selling a secret "generative ranking" tactic. But the statement needs context.

Why "No Special Steps" Does Not Mean "Do Nothing"

Mueller's comment means there is no separate submission process or hidden tag for AI answers. It does not mean every indexed page has an equal chance of being cited. AI answers summarize a small set of sources, not the whole index. The GEO research paper, published at KDD 2024 by researchers from Princeton University and IIT Delhi, measured this directly: adding citations, quotations, and statistics to content improved visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%. Ranking on page one is not the same as being chosen for the answer.

GEO is the work that happens after you are technically eligible: making your content the source an AI wants to cite.

What Changes When Answers Replace Links

Traditional search returns ten links. The user picks one. AI search returns one answer. The user may never leave the result page. The winner is the site the AI names, not the site at position one.

This shifts the goal from "be visible" to "be selected."

    Traditional SEOGenerative Engine Optimization
Rank in the top 10Be chosen as a source
Optimize for keywordsOptimize for answers and entities
    Win the clickWin the citation
Compete with 10 resultsCompete with 2-4 cited sources

The fundamentals of SEO still matter. Without them, you are not in the game. But they are the entry ticket, not the prize.

    What to Focus On

These five actions align with Mueller's statement and with the way AI systems actually select sources.

    1. Let AI Crawlers In

Make sure your robots.txt allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, and other AI user-agents. If a crawler cannot read your page, it cannot cite it.

    2. Write Direct Answers

Start sections with a clear answer, then add detail. AI models extract concise statements more easily than long narrative paragraphs.

    Example:

    • Weak: "Many factors influence the choice of a CRM."
    • Strong: "The best CRM for a 10-person SaaS team is one that integrates with your existing billing and support tools."

    3. Use Structured Data

Add Schema.org markup that tells machines what your page represents. Use Article, FAQPage, Organization, Product, and HowTo schema where they apply. Valid markup reduces the chance that an AI misreads your content.

    4. Define Your Entities

State clearly who you are, what you do, and who it is for. Use consistent names for products, people, and concepts across your site. Ambiguous entities make it harder for AI to trust you as a source.

    5. Earn Authority Signals

AI systems prefer sources that other trusted sites mention. Seek mentions on industry publications, news sites, review platforms, and reference pages. Links help, but unlinked brand mentions also signal recognition.

    The Honest Takeaway

There is no shortcut to appearing in generative AI answers. Google's message is that the basics still open the door. GEO is what helps you walk through it.
